Rationale
The free mesalazine generated is considered safe in two lists. Acetyl salicylic acid is an inducer of CYP 2C19.
Chemical description
(To be edited, initial data ST OCT 04) Used in ulcerating colitis, 675 g/d perorally. Balsalazide is mesalazine (5-amino salicylic acid; 5-ASA) bound to a carrier molecule (4-aminobenzoyl-beta-alanine; 4-ABA) by an azo binding. In colon the aniinflammatory mesalazine is liberated via bacterial azo-reduction.
