Macrogols are used as osmotic laxatives. A mixture of macrogol 3350 or 4000 with electrolytes is used for bowel preparation before colonoscopy, radiological procedures, or surgery. Common adverse reactions of macrogols that can be confused with an acute porphyric attack are gastrointestinal discomfort, bloating, and nausea.

Not absorbed from the garstrointerstinal tract, eliminated in feces.

Uneventful use reported in 2 patients with acute porphyria.
