A07EC04 - Balsalazide |
Probably not porphyrinogenic |
PNP |
Rationale
The free mesalazine generated is considered safe in two lists. Acetyl salicylic acid is an inducer of CYP2C19.
Chemical description
Used in ulcerating colitis, 675 g/d perorally. Balsalazide is mesalazine (5-amino salicylic acid; 5-ASA) bound to a carrier molecule (4-aminobenzoyl-beta-alanine; 4-ABA) by an azo binding. In colon the aniinflammatory mesalazine is liberated via bacterial azo-reduction. About 25% of the dose is absorbed after N-acetylation in the colon mucosa and the liver.
